HiMCM is open to high school students in grade 12 and below. The majority of participants are international high school students in grades 9-12, most of whom are interested in STEM, engineering, economics, and finance, and aspire to apply to top-tier universities such as the Ivy League and G5 institutions. For students and parents participating in the HiMCM modeling competition for the first time, it is highly recommended to find teammates during the summer to practice and prepare for the awards!

The Prestige and Value of HiMCM
HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling) is in the first tier of global high school mathematical modeling competitions. It is officially hosted by COMAP (Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications) and supported by academic institutions such as the NSF (National Science Foundation), MAA (Mathematical Association of America), and INFORMS.
HiMCM shares the same origins as the MCM (Mathematical Contest in Modeling for college students), IMMC/IMC (International Mathematical Modeling Challenge), and MidMCM (Middle School Mathematical Contest in Modeling). It boasts extreme international recognition and academic value, and is highly recognized by undergraduate programs in the US, UK, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as overseas summer schools.
Each year, over 1,000 teams (more than 4,000 participants) from around the world join the HiMCM competition. The competition features unified global judging criteria, and awards are compared horizontally on a global scale. The awards are highly prestigious, and the actual academic competitiveness is extremely high.
Unlike exam-based international competitions (such as AMC or USACO), HiMCM is a project-based competition. The specific format is as follows:
- Competition Format: Project-based competition.
- Competition Process: Problem analysis, mathematical modeling, programming solutions, data validation, and conclusion reflection.
- Competition Requirements: Teams must complete a 20-25 page all-English modeling paper within 14 days.
This format completely replicates the university research process, exercising comprehensive academic strength and problem-solving abilities.
Papers winning the HiMCM Outstanding Winner (O Prize) will be stored in the COMAP global case library. They can be included in college application essays as “academic achievements,” and some articles or solutions will even be used as classroom cases by universities.

Admissions officers value comprehensive abilities demonstrated in HiMCM, such as mathematical modeling, research writing, teamwork, and problem-solving. It serves as a highly differentiated academic background in the era of intense standardized test competition.
Global Participation and Award Statistics
COMAP states in its official contest instructions that over 1,000 teams – more than 4,000 students – take part in HiMCM and MidMCM each year. Approximate participation in recent seasons, compiled from COMAP announcements:

On the USA side, COMAP’s official results pages report 221 USA teams in 2023, 246 in 2024, and 273 in 2025 – and each year two of those teams are selected to represent the USA at the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM2C).
Despite the growing number of participants, the award rate remains relatively low. However, winning any of the O Prize (Outstanding), F Prize (Finalist), M Prize (Meritorious), or H Prize (Honorable Mention) holds significant value and validity for college applications.
