The High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) is an international mathematical modeling competition run by COMAP. A team of up to four students works during a 14-day window each November on one open-ended, real-world problem, and submits a single written paper in English. For 2026 the official window is 4–17 November 2026. The most important thing to understand before you read anything else: HiMCM is not a harder version of the AMC. It is a different activity that happens to use mathematics.
The one distinction that explains everything else
Almost every maths competition a Chinese international-school student meets before HiMCM shares the same shape: you sit alone, the clock is short, and every question has a correct answer that someone already knows. The AMC, the AIME, the Australian AMC, Math League — all of them reward speed and pattern recognition against a fixed answer key.
HiMCM removes all three of those properties at once:

Read the last row again, because it is where most strong students are caught off guard. In HiMCM there is no answer to be right about. Two teams can build completely different models of the same problem and both score well, or both score poorly. What separates them is whether each modelling decision — every assumption, every variable dropped, every model family chosen — is argued for in the paper.
This is why a student with a strong AIME score is not automatically a strong HiMCM candidate, and why a student who has never qualified for AIME can be excellent at it. The skills overlap far less than the shared word “maths” suggests.
The rules that actually shape how you prepare
Four facts, confirmed on COMAP’s published contest pages, drive nearly every preparation decision:
- The 2026 window is 4–17 November 2026. Fourteen consecutive days, once a year. There is no second sitting and no makeup date, which makes HiMCM unusually unforgiving of a clashing school calendar.
- Teams may consist of up to four students. Four is a ceiling, not a requirement — but see the section below on why most teams should use all four seats.
- Eligibility is broad. COMAP states that “all students in high school grades or below can participate” in HiMCM. There is no qualifying round to clear first.
- Younger students have their own contest. MidMCM runs the same format for “students 14½ years or younger on the start date of the contest”. If your student is near that line, the choice is a real decision rather than a formality.

Fourteen days is a management problem before it is a maths problem
The window length is the single most misunderstood part of the contest. Two weeks sounds generous. In practice it is short, for a reason that has nothing to do with mathematics: the deliverable is a written argument, and writing is the step teams consistently under-budget.
A team that spends twelve days building an elegant model and two days writing will almost always lose to a team that spends eight days on a simpler model and six days explaining it properly. The paper is the only thing the judges see. A model that exists only in someone’s code, or in a conversation the team had on day four, does not exist as far as the result is concerned.
Note also that teams are not obliged to use the full window — but the days you do not use are days your competitors are using to test, validate, and rewrite.
Four seats, four jobs
The most common mistake in team formation is assembling four versions of the same student — usually four strong problem-solvers who all want to work on the model and none of whom wants to write. A HiMCM team is better understood as a small working system with four distinct jobs:
- Modelling — framing the problem, choosing assumptions, selecting the model family and justifying why that one.
- Computation — implementing it, running the numbers, producing the sensitivity analysis that shows the result is not an accident.
- Research — finding, checking and citing the data the model rests on. Weak data quietly invalidates strong mathematics.
- Writing and quality control — turning all of it into a coherent English paper that a judge can follow, and holding the team to the format requirements.
These are roles, not people: on a four-person team everyone contributes mathematically, and the roles blur in both directions. But if nobody owns writing or data by day two, both will be done badly on day thirteen. Who HiMCM actually suits
An honest filter, because this contest suits some strong students poorly:

That last row deserves emphasis for students in Chinese international schools. Early-to-mid November frequently collides with mock examinations and, for Year 13 / Grade 12 students, with university application deadlines. HiMCM is not a contest you can absorb into a busy fortnight; the calendar check should happen before the team is formed, not after.
